To Defile The Earth Is To Defile Ourselves by M.N. Hopkins

For to defile the Earth, is to defile yourselves, since you are part of the Earth's body. This tendency toward self-destruction will change in time and Mankind will again make an honest effort to protect and cherish the Earth and see to it's restored health and vitality.

We are indeed our environment which also includes the parts of the environment which are destructive. Destruction is usually proceeded with new growth, as of any transformation, it's always a difficult time to bare which will in turn give fruit.
