The Wisdom Of Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov - Light

Daily Meditation: Friday, January 31, 2014

Light - springs to mind when we meet a true sage "In certain people’s presence, when you see the expression on their face, how they look at you, and feel everything they radiate, the word that immediately springs to mind is ‘light’. As if they were able to distil an imponderable substance in their heart and soul and then project it out in the form of light. Or as if they had captured something of the light diffused in space and had condensed it within them. Their whole body seems made of a translucent substance within which a flame is burning. For many this light remains a great mystery, because they do not know it is the result of very real processes in the inner life: the sage, the initiate, has acquired it through constant work. From each thought, wish, feeling and action that they manage to make more disinterested, more generous and purer, they extract an infinitesimal amount of light.

It is said in the sacred books that the human soul has the power to move the heavens. Yes, the soul can shake the heavens, but only through its desire to obtain light. If it insists, demands and begs, the Lord himself, who is light, cannot refuse to give it."

A Farcical Approach To Food Safety by David Cronin

EFSA

A farcical approach to food safety

by David Cronin
Spin Watch,   28 January 2014

This year EFSA could take steps to improve the situation. It is scheduled to review a 2011 policy paper on its "independence".
If the authority wants to engage in something other than a whitewash, then the first thing it should do is to acknowledge that the existing policy is farcical.
The signature at the end of the document is sufficient to strip it of any credibility. It bears the name of Diána Bánáti, who resigned from the authority in 2012 after other European Union bodies started raising questions about her activities. She was serving both as chairwoman of EFSA's management board and as a director of the International Life Sciences Institute, a lobbying group for the food industry.
Taking such a relaxed attitude to conflict of interest issues, the paper reads as if it was written during a siesta. It says that 'interests are a natural and inevitable consequence of attaining scientific recognition at international level in a given field'.
This indicates that EFSA thinks it is generally acceptable for scientists to work simultaneously for the private sector and for public agencies.
Having examined EFSA's activities carefully over the past few years, I'm worried that its staff spend too much time in a majestic palace to understand how things work in the real world. Or maybe they do understand but refuse to recognise the nature of the problem, lest they upset their corporate chums.
I've seen quite a few letters that the authority receives from agri-food giants. These show that major corporations will try to exert pressure on regulators when they encounter any difficulties. In March 2011, for example, Syngenta complained about the length of time that EFSA was taking to complete 'risk assessments' of genetically-modified maize. Such delays, the Swiss firm warned, 'may have a serious impact' on the international food trade.
It shouldn't really be necessary to spell out what is going on here. The reason why corporations want to get their products on the market swiftly is that all they care about is increasing their profits.
Scientists, however, are supposed to be motivated by loftier concerns such as the pursuit of knowledge and truth. It follows that science can only be truly independent if it is not reliant on big business for funding.
Syngenta's links with EFSA have proven controversial. In 2008, the firm hired Suzy Renckens to work for it on biotechnology regulation; she had previously coordinated EFSA's panel for genetically modified foods.
A row during 2013 suggested that the relationship might have soured since that revolving door case. Syngenta threatened to sue the agency after taking umbrage at a press statement about the effects of certain pesticides on bees.
Despite that squabble, EFSA continues to be highly accommodating to Syngenta.
I was disturbed recently to come across a dossier which raises concerns about how chemicals get rubber-stamped on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 2012, EFSA issued a report on sedaxane, a pesticide manufactured by Syngenta for use on cereals. Later that year, the European Commission (in theory, a separate institution to EFSA) noticed that sedaxane had been categorised as 'likely to be carcinogenic to humans' by America's Environmental Protection Agency. As EFSA hadn't recommended that the product be classified as a carcinogen, the Commission asked the authority to 'update its conclusions'.
EFSA's revised report was published in January last year. It reached exactly the same findings as the earlier one. While it expressed some concern about the long-term effects of the product on birds and mammals who feed on grain and seeds, it didn't explicitly state that it could cause cancer to humans.
These reports were based on studies supplied to EFSA and to the French government. Guess who supplied those studies: Syngenta, the very company that has a vested interest in selling sedaxane, irrespective of what damage it may do to health or the environment.
For a short while, I thought this might be a rare instance of America taking a more robust stance on food safety than Europe. Then I learned that the US had granted federal clearance to sedaxane for use in agriculture during 2012.
Along with many other campaigners, I have become quite obsessed with the efforts to clinch a trade and investment pact between the EU and the US. One of the major objectives of the corporations that have shaped the agenda for the trade talks is to achieve "regulatory convergence": a fancy term for removing any differences between the EU and the US. Their chief target is the EU's "precautionary principle", which allows it to place restrictions on substances if there are sound reasons to believe they are dangerous.
The sedaxane saga illustrates that the standards applying on both sides of the Atlantic are already too low. Any attempt to lower them further must, therefore, be resisted.

Simple Antiseptic Homemade Mouthwash Recipes

Antiseptic Homemade Mouthwash Recipe

 Frugally Sustainable,  1 February 2012

By now you all should know that I love to make my own natural health, home, and beauty products.
I love them because they work and I love them because they’re frugal.

So when I was using my fancy-pants “eco friendly, 100% natural” mouthwash the other day, I thought to myself, “I think I could make this and save myself some money!”

So I did.

Benefits of Using Homemade Mouthwash

Good oral care is vital to our health and vice versa. Health and diet have even been know to heal cavities! Rinsing out the mouth with a cleansing mouthwash is a large part of good oral hygiene. And there are many benefits to making your own:
  • It’s cheap. You can create your own mouthwash at a fraction of the cost of store-bought and still experience excellent results.
  • You control the ingredients. Making your own mouthwash allows you to control the quality of that which you put into your mouth.
  • No hidden chemicals. Commercially prepared products are often heavy-laden with additives such as preservatives, dyes, artificial sweeteners and a multitude of harmful chemicals. Eliminate them all by making your own!

Variety of Homemade Mouthwash Recipes
There are a variety of different recipes to meet the needs of every individual. Here are just a few:

Basic Mouthwash: 1 cup water, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 3 drops peppermint essential oils. Mix all ingredients in a glass jar and shake well. Swish in mouth, then spit out. Store on bathroom counter.

Old-Fashioned Disinfectant Mouthwash: 1 cup water and 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. Combine ingredients and store in a glass jar. Shake well prior to use. Swish mixture in mouth, then spit out. Will keep indefinitely on the counter.

Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash: 1 part hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1 part water. Swish mouthwash in mouth, then spit out. Mix enough for single use and discard extra solution.

Lemon Whitening Mouthwash: Not really a mouthwash, but you can rub a piece of lemon on stained teeth for a whitening effect.

Herbal Mouthwash: Create an herbal infusion by steeping 2 cups of boiling water, 1/2 ounce of whole cloves, 1 ounce of Oregon grape root, and 1 ounce of rosemary in a pint-sized glass mason jar, overnight. In the morning strain the infusion using a piece of cheesecloth. Swish in mouth, the spit out. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Will keep for 1 week.

Simple Essential Oil Mouthwash: To 1 cup of water add 20 drops of either cinnamon, clove, wintergreen, or tea tree oil. Combine all ingredients in a glass jar. Shake well prior to each use in order to distribute the essential oils. Will keep on the bathroom counter indefinitely.

The Seeds Of Suicide: How Monsanto Destroys Farming by Dr. Vandana Shiva

The Seeds Of Suicide: How Monsanto Destroys Farming

by Dr. Vandana Shiva

Global Reasearch Canada,  27 Jamuary 2013

Monsanto’s talk of ‘technology’ tries to hide its real objectives of control over seed where genetic engineering is a means to control seed,

“Monsanto is an agricultural company.
We apply innovation and technology to help farmers around the world \produce more while conserving more.”
“Producing more, Conserving more, Improving farmers lives.”

These are the promises Monsanto India’s website makes, alongside pictures of smiling, prosperous farmers from the state of Maharashtra. This is a desperate attempt by Monsanto and its PR machinery to delink the epidemic of farmers’ suicides in India from the company’s growing control over cotton seed supply — 95 per cent of India’s cotton seed is now controlled by Monsanto.

Control over seed is the first link in the food chain because seed is the source of life. When a corporation controls seed, it controls life, especially the life of farmers.

Monsanto’s concentrated control over the seed sector in India as well as across the world is very worrying. This is what connects farmers’ suicides in India to Monsanto vs Percy Schmeiser in Canada, to Monsanto vs Bowman in the US, and to farmers in Brazil suing Monsanto for $2.2 billion for unfair collection of royalty.

Through patents on seed, Monsanto has become the “Life Lord” of our planet, collecting rents for life’s renewal from farmers, the original breeders.
Patents on seed are illegitimate because putting a toxic gene into a plant cell is not “creating” or “inventing” a plant. These are seeds of deception — the deception that Monsanto is the creator of seeds and life; the deception that while Monsanto sues farmers and traps them in debt, it pretends to be working for farmers’ welfare, and the deception that GMOs feed the world. GMOs are failing to control pests and weeds, and have instead led to the emergence of superpests and superweeds.

The entry of Monsanto in the Indian seed sector was made possible with a 1988 Seed Policy imposed by the World Bank, requiring the Government of India to deregulate the seed sector. Five things changed with Monsanto’s entry: First, Indian companies were locked into joint-ventures and licensing arrangements, and concentration over the seed sector increased. Second, seed which had been the farmers’ common resource became the “intellectual property” of Monsanto, for which it started collecting royalties, thus raising the costs of seed. Third, open pollinated cotton seeds were displaced by hybrids, including GMO hybrids. A renewable resource became a non-renewable, patented commodity. Fourth, cotton which had earlier been grown as a mixture with food crops now had to be grown as a monoculture, with higher vulnerability to pests, disease, drought and crop failure. Fifth, Monsanto started to subvert India’s regulatory processes and, in fact, started to use public resources to push its non-renewable hybrids and GMOs through so-called public-private partnerships (PPP).

In 1995, Monsanto introduced its Bt technology in India through a joint-venture with the Indian company Mahyco. In 1997-98, Monsanto started open field trials of its GMO Bt cotton illegally and announced that it would be selling the seeds commercially the following year. India has rules for regulating GMOs since 1989, under the Environment Protection Act. It is mandatory to get approval from the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee under the ministry of environment for GMO trials. The Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology sued Monsanto in the Supreme Court of India and Monsanto could not start the commercial sales of its Bt cotton seeds until 2002.
And, after the damning report of India’s parliamentary committee on Bt crops in August 2012, the panel of technical experts appointed by the Supreme Court recommended a 10-year moratorium on field trials of all GM food and termination of all ongoing trials of transgenic crops.
But it had changed Indian agriculture already.

Monsanto’s seed monopolies, the destruction of alternatives, the collection of superprofits in the form of royalties, and the increasing vulnerability of monocultures has created a context for debt, suicides and agrarian distress which is driving the farmers’ suicide epidemic in India. This systemic control has been intensified with Bt cotton. That is why most suicides are in the cotton belt.

An internal advisory by the agricultural ministry of India in January 2012 had this to say to the cotton-growing states in India — “Cotton farmers are in a deep crisis since shifting to Bt cotton. The spate of farmer suicides in 2011-12 has been particularly severe among Bt cotton farmers.”

The highest acreage of Bt cotton is in Maharashtra and this is also where the highest farmer suicides are. Suicides increased after Bt cotton was introduced — Monsanto’s royalty extraction, and the high costs of seed and chemicals have created a debt trap. According to Government of India data, nearly 75 per cent rural debt is due to purchase inputs. As Monsanto’s profits grow, farmers’ debt grows. It is in this systemic sense that Monsanto’s seeds are seeds of suicide.

The ultimate seeds of suicide is Monsanto’s patented technology to create sterile seeds. (Called “Terminator technology” by the media, sterile seed technology is a type of Gene Use Restriction Technology, GRUT, in which seed produced by a crop will not grow — crops will not produce viable offspring seeds or will produce viable seeds with specific genes switched off.) The Convention on Biological Diversity has banned its use, otherwise Monsanto would be collecting even higher profits from seed.

Monsanto’s talk of “technology” tries to hide its real objectives of ownership and control over seed where genetic engineering is just a means to control seed and the food system through patents and intellectual property rights.

A Monsanto representative admitted that they were “the patient’s diagnostician, and physician all in one” in writing the patents on life-forms, from micro-organisms to plants, in the TRIPS’ agreement of WTO. Stopping farmers from saving seeds and exercising their seed sovereignty was the main objective. Monsanto is now extending its patents to conventionally bred seed, as in the case of broccoli and capsicum, or the low gluten wheat it had pirated from India which we challenged as a biopiracy case in the European Patent office.

That is why we have started Fibres of Freedom in the heart of Monsanto’s Bt cotton/suicide belt in Vidharba. We have created community seed banks with indigenous seeds and helped farmers go organic. No GMO seeds, no debt, no suicides.

500 % Radiation Increase of "No Concern": Experts to Unveil Radiation Levels in California From Fukushima Fallout by Mike Barret

In California

500% Radiation Increase of ‘No Concern’: Experts to Unveil Radiation Levels in CA from Fukushima Fallout

by Mike Barret

Natural Society,  26 January 2014

An Assembly member from California wants more transparency for citizens concerning the Fukushima fallout hitting their shores. Bob Wieckowski is asking for the Department of Public Health to post updated information about the true radiation levels on California coastlines, requesting that they be put in ‘layman’s’ terms to mitigate any concerns about the true radiation exposure that many citizens and the marine animals are being exposed to.

Meanwhile, a citizen-posted YouTube video showing alarmingly high radiation rates on ‘Surfer’s Beach’ has gone viral. Public officials did not respond to the spike, and did not comment on the video, except to say that there were no radiation levels to be concerned about, though this man’s video shows a 500% increase in one area.

A compilation of more than 19 governmental and academic agencies will begin testing huge batches of sea kelp for radiation exposure however under a project called Kelp Watch 2014.

Read: 8 Signs Fukushima Radiation is Blasting Oceans and U.S.

“It is imperative that we monitor this coastal forest for any radioactive contaminants that will be arriving this year in the ocean currents from the Fukushima disaster,” CSULB biology professor Steven L. Manley Manley told CBS News. The forthcoming news along the California coast should be interesting considering TEPCO has already admitted that as much as 10 trillion becquerels of strontium 90 and cesium 137 have already seeped into the ocean. This figure is likely a very low estimate compared to averages assumed by other experts.

The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation Video with F. William Engdahl

January 4, 2014

F. William Engdahl is an American German freelance journalist, historian and economic researcher. "Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation" This lecture at the Open Mind Conference 2013, focuses on how a small socio-political American elite seeks to establish its control over the very basis of human survival, the provision of our daily bread. Control the food and you control the people. This is no ordinary lecture about the perils of GMO.

Engdahl takes the audience inside the corridors of power, into the backrooms of the science labs, behind closed doors in the corporate boardrooms and reveals a World of profit-driven political intrigue, government corruption and coercion, where genetic manipulation and the patenting of life forms are used to gain worldwide control over food production. The lecture is based on Engdahls book "Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation" which is an eye-opener, a must-read for all those committed to the causes of social justice and World peace.

Tell The EU Parliament To Keep The Internet Free & Open Before Thursday, 23 January 2014

In case you haven’t heard, the open and creative character of the internet is under threat in Europe.

This Thursday, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) Committee of the European Parliament will vote on the European Commission’s Telecoms Single Market proposal. As written, the proposal includes provisions that would undermine net neutrality and establish an internet where discrimination is the default setting. Unless the IMCO Committee stands up for net neutrality, ISPs will be given the power to decide which innovations and online content users get to enjoy.

Tell your MEP: Stand up and protect my internet!

The European Parliament has a unique opportunity to preserve the open and neutral internet -- its boldness, creativity, and diversity. In the absence of net neutrality rules, the success of innovative new technology companies, artists, and writers will not depend on their own creativity, but instead on whether they get permission to reach internet users from big telcos like Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, and Orange.

It’s up to us to make sure the founding principles of the open internet aren't crushed by big telcos. Rules must be put into place that ensure telcos and ISPs treat all internet traffic equally, no matter what it is, where it came from, or where it was going. Without these rules in place, telcos across Europe would be free to carve up the open internet.

Take action today: Tell your MEP to protect an open and neutral internet!
Internet users and entrepreneurs stand only to lose from online "pay-to-play" arrangements. in some member states, such as Germany and Spain, telcos are already undermining net freedom by providing preferential treatment to their own services. This Regulation, if not amended, would make this exception the rule across the entire continent. The IMCO committee must stop ISPs from restricting innovation and creativity. If the telcos get their way, artists won’t reach new audiences, writers won’t reach readers, and new online services will never reach their customers unless they pay ISPs first.

We need your help to protect the open and neutral internet. Access is part of a European coalition that launched savetheinternet.eu, where you can learn more about the Commission's Telecoms Single Market proposal, how the proposal could violate our civil liberties and what you can do to protect internet freedom.

MEPs must take action to protect the internet we know and love. Click here to tell them Europeans need action, and we need it right now.

How to Grow Organic Potatoes: No. 1 Potato Expert Shares His Best Tips by Joanna Poncavage

How to Grow Organic Potatoes: No. 1 Potato Expert Shares His Best Tips

Interview by Joanna Poncavage

Mother Earth News,  February/March 2014

In this exclusive interview, professional potato producer Jim Gerritsen gives the full scoop on how to grow organic potatoes, how to store your spuds, and much more.

Jim Gerritsen and family have been growing seed potatoes for 37 years at Wood Prairie Farm in Bridgewater, Maine. Gerritsen, a potato farmer whom many consider the No. 1 organic potato expert in North America, has a lot to say about the benefits of homegrown spuds.

“If you do a good job, you can harvest about 70 to 90 pounds per 100 square feet — that’s a lot of calories and a lot of nutrition,” he says. To get to that point, though, a grower first needs to learn the ins and outs of how to grow organic potatoes on a home-garden scale. Gerritsen agreed to share his potato wisdom with MOTHER EARTH NEWS, and his tips are sure to raise your potato-growing IQ.

Let’s dig in!

What’s the No. 1 most important key to growing organic potatoes?
I would say it’s the seed. Seed is the most important key to growing any organic crop, and that’s especially true for potatoes. There’s a wide variation in seed potato quality, and certified seed potatoes will always do best in terms of yield, storage and overall quality.

How do you grow your seed potatoes?
We start with tissue-cultured, diseasefree mini-tubers that are produced in a greenhouse or hydroponically. We plant them in spring, and after a couple of generations we have enough to sell. Currently, we cultivate two to four generations each of 23 varieties.

Why can’t gardeners just plant potatoes sold in grocery stores?
You can use supermarket spuds, but they won’t grow well because they’re sprayed with chemicals to inhibit sprouting. Some people buy organic potatoes, thinking they haven’t been sprayed, but even these won’t do as well as certified seed potatoes that have been handled properly and are physiologically young. The proof’s in the pudding — or, in your mashed potatoes.

What are ideal growing conditions for potatoes?
The most important thing to remember is that potatoes are a cool-season crop. They simply can’t take a lot of heat and can actually die in temperatures above 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

In what area of the United States are potatoes easiest to grow?
In the northern-tier states, where potatoes can be planted anytime in summer and harvested in fall. In the South, on the other hand, growers need to plant early — either in late winter or early spring — to get the crop to finish growing before the hot weather comes on. Southern growers can also wait for cooler fall weather, planting in July or August and harvesting in October or November.
We have one customer in southern Michigan who plants her crop in fall, putting straw bales over the potatoes to protect them. Then she peels off the straw bales in spring, the plants start growing again, and she has fresh new potatoes in June.

Most growers planting a fall crop live in the southern-tier states, such as California, Arizona, Texas, across the Deep South, and maybe up as far as Virginia. But I say that if a grower can be successfully with fall planting in southern Michigan, then a lot more northerners could be experimenting with it.

What’s the ideal soil for potatoes?
Fertile soil that has good aeration, plenty of organic matter and a granular structure is ideal, such as sandy loam that drains well. Heavy clay soil that holds moisture around a developing tuber will impact that tuber negatively (in such cases, growers can lighten soil with coir or leaves). Potatoes are a heavy-feeding crop, so make sure your soil’s fertility level is high, with good, balanced mineralization. After you have a high level of fertility, you can cut back on amendments. To get to that point, we add 10 to 20 tons of compost per acre, which equates to almost a pound per square foot, and then we scale down.
