The decision by the mainstream media to ignore the thousands of individuals marching down the busiest streets of major cities worldwide may be appalling, but in reality it matters very little at this point. Not only is the movement against Monsanto adding to its number each day thanks to the real alternative media and intelligent activism, but the movement as a whole is driven by an inexorable desire to push the GMO ‘food bully’ out of our food supply.

And in addition to the rapid success, growth, and determination of the movement, we have key players in the alternative media that have decided they’re fed up with the hindered focus of mainstream news agencies. I am extremely glad that we decided to run live coverage on the March Against Monsanto in Philadelphia for its first year, as otherwise the event would not have been properly documented and shared. Couple that with the fact that the mainstream media is on its last breathe of life, and you realize that the alternative news media can actually succeed without the support of the multi-billion dollar news agencies whose ratings are plunging.

What’s truly amazing is that I saw hundreds of pedestrians not taking part in the march use their smart phones to take a few minutes of video. Video that they will likely post on Facebook, Youtube, or Twitter and incite social media activity. Whether it’s asking what is going on via their hundreds of friends on Facebook, or showing support for the march. This is how ideas and movements spread in the modern age, and this is how things like the March Against Monsanto go viral — no television required.

In fact, it really just comes down to strong ideas and topics. We have so much support from so many different groups coming out and standing up against Monsanto that it just goes to show there is a ‘sleeping giant’ of awake individuals who thoroughly understand the challenges we face as a nation. One only needs to tap into that powerful energy of resistance to ignite a movement, like a match to a gasoline-drenched fire pit.

I was extremely impressed and inspired by the support at March Against Monsanto, including the number of readers who came up to voice their support. At the end of the day, even corrupt Monsanto executives and paid-off politicians cannot stand up against a movement like this.

With cancer cures seeping into mainstream media from natural health practitioners almost weekly now, it makes one wonder why anyone would subject themselves to chemotherapy and radiation, since there is growing evidence that it poisons the body and simply causes the cancer cells to become temporarily dormant only to return later in fuller force. While these treatments are often used unnecessarily to ‘treat’ cancer patients, there are other, less invasive cures being used by Ayurvedic clinics all over India and in other parts of the world – some solutions having as much as a 90% success rate.

In several clinics, lung and brain cancers have been treated with an over 90% success rate, and in almost every single case, the cancer was lessened. According to a clinical research test conducted in one Ayurvedic Clinic, lung cancers were minimized so effectively that only .09% of the participants in one 500-plus-person study still remained ‘uncured’.

Dr. Vikram Chauhaun, M.D. recommends a whole list of Ayurvedic treatments to effectively treat brain tumors caused by cancer, including herbs like Hirak Bhasma, Swarna Bhasma, Swarn Vasant Malti, and Abhrak Bhasma Sahasar Puti. Other Ayurvedic remedies work on immunity and attempt to reverse metastasizing cells. These include Divya Sila Sindura, which aids in treating lung cancers by supporting bronchial health – specifically by increasing red blood cell count, which is counterproductive for growing cancer cells. Much cancer research states that cancer cannot grow in a well oxygenated cellular system. The herb Heerak Bhasma has also been shown to support cancer prevention and reversal as well.


Dr. Garcia, M.D. states that chemotherapy only has an effectiveness rate around 3%. Many clinical studies are proving this is to be no exaggerated truth, though it is shocking. According to less slanted evidence that doesn’t exaggerate the improvement rate based on only a few cancers that have responded better to chemo than the rest, the most common cancers have much more disparaging recovery rates, like breast cancer 1.4%; prostate cancer 0.0%; lung cancer 2.0%; and colon cancer 1.0%.

A journal published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2004 even admitted that chemotherapy had a 98% failure rate. While this rate is arguable amongst medical practitioners and scientists, it is obvious that chemo is very hard on an individual and often causes them to feel sick for months at a time, lose their hair, have terrible headaches, and lose tons of weight. If there are more natural cures, such as those offered by a 5000-year old science, why not use them instead?

The March Against Monsanto has been a major success, generating mass awareness across the nation and the globe alike as millions marched into the streets of major cities and towns to voice their opposition against Monsanto’s monopoly on the food supply at large. While I was travelling away from my new headquarters in Austin, Texas, I was able to head to the local March Against Monsanto here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and catch as nearly 1,000 individuals marched right down one of the busiest streets in the city.

I was also able to score a number of interviews with well-known food activists, celebrities, police, and others. I was overwhelmed by the number of activists who funneled into the protest as it went on as well, growing into the thousands like a snowball gaining momentum and size. There was also a great degree of support for NaturalSociety and myself from concerned citizens who were passing out our articles and spreading the word. On more than one occasion, large groups of those passing through came by and asked what the march was all about.

The curious were met with sincere answers, and were warned that they were likely supporting GMO juggernaut Monsanto through eating processed junk and fast food — a company that, as I detailed via a borrowed bullhorn from a protester to the crowd, has been caught running ‘slave-like’ rings in South America to harvest their GMO crops. And that’s not even getting into the peer-reviewed health effects that we know of regarding the consumption of Roundup-drenched GMO foods.

I will be posting more videos throughout today and over the next few days documenting the March Against Monsanto here in Philadelphia and the amazing acts of activism that I was able to record on video with the help of Mike Barrett and other crew members aiding me.

Overall, the March Against Monsanto has been a huge success. Stay tuned for some creative activism concepts here at NaturalSociety that we’ve been working on behind the scenes.

800 Scientists Demand Global GMO “Experiment” End

Did you hear about the 800 esteemed scientists who came together and demanded the production of genetically modified crops and products be stopped? Scientists who called on world powers to re-evaluate the future of agriculture and seek sustainability rather than corporate profits? Don’t be surprised if you haven’t, as the mainstream media won’t touch this one.

Eight-hundred scientists did make such a demand. They made it first over a decade ago and they have updated it over the years, adding signatures and release dates. Still global powers have all but ignored their calls.


The Institute of Science in Society is a non-profit group of scientists from around the world, dedicated to bringing an end to what they refer to as the “dangerous GMO “experiment. In their open letter to the world, they have highlighted why governments need to stop genetically modified crops now – before there are irreversible effects on the health of the people and the health of the earth at large.

The Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments calls for “the immediate suspension of all environmental releases of GM crops and products, both commercially and in open field trials, for at least 5 years.”

They also want patents on organisms, cell lines, and living things revoked and banned. Such patents (a sort of corporate version of “playing God,”) “threaten food security, sanction biopiracy of indigenous knowledge and genetic resources, violate basic human rights and dignity, compromise healthcare, impede medical and scientific research and are against the welfare of animals.”

And as Anthony Gucciardi recently detailed on NaturalSociety, this would be bad news for Monsanto following the recent Supreme Court decision that they have the ‘right’ to patent life.

Scientists Speaking Out

In the beginning, after its first draft in 1999, the letter had just over 300 signatures. Since then, it’s grown significantly. At the writing of this article, the document has 828 signatures representing 84 different countries.

While we are told by Monsanto and the FDA that GMOs are nothing to worry about and instead safe tools for the future of agriculture, a growing number of esteemed scientists seem to disagree. So, who’s listening?

The letter has been presented to numerous governments and organizations, including the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development, the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity, the World Trade Organization, and yes, even the U.S. Congress. The letter has been shared at these venues, but it doesn’t seem like anyone was listening.

The populous has to dig for information like this. We have to seek out the news sources willing to cover it, because we won’t hear about this letter on the nightly news or through a governmental agency. No, the U.S. government wants you to fear what they want you to fear (“terror” and crime, for instance), but they certainly don’t want you to fear the information and the food they are putting on your table. Or the GMOs they are funding with your taxpayer dime.

A new free app called ‘Buycott’ allows you to use your Android or iPhone to analyze products and determine if you’re supporting Monsanto’s GMOs, Big Food companies who are damaging your health, or simply low quality products.

Have you ever wished you could own a parrot that sat on your shoulder and said, “squak! don’t buy that’ as you ambled through a grocery store or retail shop, purchasing something like toilet paper or a box of macaroni shells that would add to the financial coffers of companies like Monsanto, or billionaire industrialist David Koch? While your local grocery store probably wouldn’t let you get much further than the pet food aisle, you can now download an App for your Android or iPhone that tells you exactly when you are about to purchase GMO corn or Dixie Cups, a product of one of the many subsidiary companies of Koch Industries, Georgia Pacific.

Think of the new App, championed by Darcy Burner, a former Microsoft programmer and congressional candidate, like an all-knowing friend who reminds you not to get that pair of yoga pants because Dupont Chemical (also a subsidiary of Koch) makes the lycra in them, or to choose that bag of carrots over this one, because there is no GMO in it. If you thought fair trade hang-tags were a way to keep a watchful eye on corporate greed and environmental negligence, then get a load of the app that just scans a barcode and tells you if its ‘safe’ or not.



In fact, the App will trace the product all the way back to its ‘parent’ company, so you know exactly who you are supporting with your purchases. For example, did you know McNeil Nutritionals is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, who has continued to put carcinogenic chemicals in their products for years?

Even better, you can scan your bag of chips and see if it was made by one of several dozen companies that gave millions of dollars to oppose mandatory labeling of GMO foods, and essentially, boycott them.

The app is similar to the many other initiatives currently mounting against Monsanto, as NaturalSociety Editor Anthony Gucciardi detailed a few days ago in his article ‘March Against Monsanto Is The Beginning of The End For Monsanto’.

Ivan Pardo, a 26-year old wiz kid is the freelance programmer who created the App. Thanks to inventions like Pardo’s, and the transparency his techno gadget offers, it will be harder for companies to hide behind their web of lies and convoluted oligarchy that allows just a few elite companies to rule the world with chemicals and illegal price-fixing schemes. If everything is rigged in favor of just a few billionaire industrialists, like Monsanto, then educating people about their purchases gives them the power to ‘vote’ with their dollar, and choose to purchase something else, instead. Such a simple way, to stick it to the companies who have been poisoning your food, dumping toxins in your air, water, and soil, and to support those who actually have the modicum of a moral compass when it comes to making a dollar (or several trillion) at the expense of millions of people’s health.

Let’s face it, remembering who the top 10 most unethical companies are when you are just trying to buy some dinner, or a new pair of pants shouldn’t mean you are inadvertently contributing to corporate greed and fraud. Fortunately, there’s an App for that, and it comes out in May, premiering on iTunes and the Google app store. Its free and its name is Buycott.

March Against Monsanto Is The Beginning of The End For Monsanto

The grassroots March Against Monsanto movement is spreading across the nation, and the initiative spells out an increasingly massive number of activists and concerned citizens who will ultimately be responsible for ending the GMO juggernaut through peaceful protest and the spread of information.

It really comes down to the basic understanding that what we want is real food — not chemical-laden junk that is riddled with genetically modified organisms. And of course Monsanto is responsible for the majority of such junk, holding a monopoly over the GM seed market with 90% of staple crop seeds under Monsanto control. Seeds that are sold to ignorant farmers who oftentimes end up killing themselves after they find that the seeds produce decreased yields and milk the farmers financially dry through the enforceable patents that come along with the seeds. Patents that Monsanto goons carefully enforce, preying upon small farmers through devious lawsuits and farm stakeouts.

Even organic and natural farmers are subject to such legal attacks, since it’s possible for the patented seeds (which India calls biopiracy) to blow over to such farms and begin to grow. This is also how widespread GMO contamination begins, to which the USDA simply responds ‘get insurance’. We can even go back decades to find that Monsanto was integral in the creation of the infamous Agent Orange, a Vietnam-era chemical warfare weapon which estimates say killed or maimed around 400,000 people and caused a startling 500,000 birth defects.

But the days where this information could hide as footnotes within the media are over.

March Against Monsanto Is Just The Beginning

The March Against Monsanto, which is a worldwide movement encouraging everyone to start their own local get together (here’s the Google document with all the organization info for every area) in defiance of the GMO juggernaut, is generating massive success. And with this success and media coverage comes awareness, which is absolutely essential. It was back in 2011 that I declared Monsanto be the worst company of 2011 in
what became a media blitz campaign to spread awareness. Ultimately, it even led to one of my articles becoming the most highly shared articles of that year — something that I am extremely grateful to readers for.

March Against Monsanto is a lot like that campaign, as it is simple, accessible, and absolutely making waves in the media. Just wait until several thousand protesters converge on major cities demanding that our politicians enact legislation to combat Monsanto — a company which has numerous employees and former employees stationed within government.

But what’s more? Whatever comes after the March Against Monsanto will likely be even larger and more open source. It will likely take what worked with the March Against Monsanto campaign, enhance it, and apply it to more than just Monsanto as well. This is how we get our voices heard, through massive awareness movements like this. I encourage everyone to checkout the Google document and get involved in your area. Be friendly, pass out some articles from NaturalSociety, and spread the word — personable individuals are the most effective in communicating a message of truth to others.

Vaccine Danger: Merck is Big Pharma’s Vaccine Monsanto

The pharmaceutical giant Merck enjoys vast revenues if they’re able to advertise and “lobby” politicians to pass laws promoting their vaccinations, even while still paying huge fines and settlements for the toxic aftermath of their other medicinal drugs.

Merck has paid out a total of almost $5 billion to settle nearly 27,000 Voixx civil law suits. This drug, intended for arthritic pain relief, created 27,000 cases of heart attacks and many deaths before Merck recalled it in 2004. Most of the suits occurred after the recall, which had raised a red flag for many Vioxx users and their surviving relatives.

Another $950 million was levied against Merck to pay for fines and civil settlements involving false advertising claims and fraudulent drug trial results for Vioxx. This hasn’t deterred Merck from promoting Gardasil and lobbying for governmental support to vaccinate minors without parental consent.

Vaccine manufacturing is a good business for sociopaths. Drug companies are exempt from direct liability for adverse results from vaccines. Vaccines require less testing than drugs for diseases, and they’re cheaper to manufacture. So they have a huge profit margin without financial liability risks.

Pushing a Dangerous Vaccine for a Non-Existent Threat

The scare tactic being used to promote Gardasil is cervical cancer protection. The human papilloma virus (HPV) has over 100 strains; Gardasil targets two that cause the most genital warts, while ignoring another 11 that can also lead to cancer. But ninety percent of HPV warts tend to heal on their own within two years. And they can be treated topically before then.

Bottom line, though inconvenient, HPV is not the death-warrant they are spinning it as. It usually goes away on its own or at worst is remedied by mild medical intervention. Even after young women get their three Gardasil-HPV shots, they still need to undergo Pap tests for early cervical cancer detection.

So Gardasil doesn’t even guarantee protection against cervical cancer. This data is knowingly omitted from Merck’s media press releases, doctor bribes, and political “lobbying” efforts.

VAERS reports 41 cases of cervical cancer following vaccinations with Gardasil. And VAERS (vaccine adverse event reporting service) is voluntary for doctors and mostly unknown to parents and vaccinated adults. It’s estimated that perhaps only five percent of vaccine injuries get reported to VAERS. So these reports are a fraction of actual events.

Gardasil’s mounting known death toll is almost 75 since 2009, at last count (2012). This is in addition to the serious adverse effects of thousands, of which over 10% are permanent, painful disabilities such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome or other neurological and autoimmune maladies.

This tip of a mostly unreported iceberg should be ample evidence that the risks far outweigh Gardasil’s paltry benefits.

Lawsuits against Big Pharma based on vaccines’ adverse events are fire-walled by law and contained within The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP), which was set up to have the federal government settle claims using federal funds, a fraction of which is collected from vaccine manufacturer approval fees.

Few parents whose children were vaccine-injured know about this non-jury federal court, into which access through its bureaucratic maze is difficult. The settlements are usually based on the lifetime medical fees for children’s vaccine damages or $250,000 for a child’s death.

Afterward, the parents are required to not discuss their case publicly. If they do, they risk losing their “hush” money.

Other Merck High-Risk Vaccines Without Benefits in the CDC’s Childhood Vaccination Schedule

Merck has managed to influence the medical mafia to include the Hep-B vaccine (HBV) on newborns. Hepatitis-B is transmitted sexually or by shared hypodermic needles only. Apparently, the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are now assuming all pregnant women are hypodermic injecting drug-users or promiscuously practicing unsafe sex.
Babies get several toxic Hep-B jabs before having a fully developed immune system without even testing the mother for Hepatitis-B.

The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) three in one shot has left its share of broken, (potentially) autistic children. Merck simply ignores those disasters while using the media to spread untrue claims that measles epidemics are caused by the unvaccinated.

If you’re old enough, you may remember measles, mumps, and chicken pox as common relatively harmless childhood diseases that confer immunity when they leave. Sometimes mothers would gather at “measles parties” to expose their kids to one with a measles infection in order to confer lifetime immunity.

The MMR shot has also proven to not even temporally protect against these common childhood diseases with several breakouts occurring among population sectors that have been met the “herd immunity” criteria of vaccinating all or almost all the kids in a given population.

California politicians have set a precedent for creating legislation to support Merck’s coercing young women and soon young men with Gardasil jabs. Perhaps after many lives are ruined by Gardasil vaccinations in California, a class action suit against those state legislators is in order.

Malaria finally defeated? Look And Decide For Yourself.

Malaria is finally defeated. This clinical study conducted along with the Red Cross in Uganda demonstrates the efficiency of MMS (clo2) against malaria. Every 40 seconds a child dies of malaria - there are 2,000 children a day worldwide. In Africa, the tropical disease remains one of the main causes of death. The solution is so simple but the pharmaceutical industry is not interested. If the truth comes out, that a cure for malaria is possible with a simple water disinfectant, it would not be profitable or patentable. In this clinical study with 781 subjects and 154 malaria patients, 143 sick were healed in just one day with a single dose! The remaining 11 the next day. A world sensation! We must congratulate the Red Cross for having the courage to innovate!

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has failed to protect bees from neonicotinoid pesticides, according to a lawsuit against the agency, filed by beekeepers and environmental groups. Said Paul Towers, spokesperson for the Pesticide Action Network (PAN), one of the groups involved in the lawsuit:

“Despite our best efforts to warn the agency about the problems posed by neonicotinoids, the EPA continued to ignore the clear warning signs of an ag system in trouble.”

Lawsuit Maintains the Link Between Neonicotinoids and Bee Die Off Is ‘Crystal Clear’

Neonicotinoid pesticides are a newer class of chemicals that are applied to seeds before planting. This allows the pesticide to be taken up through the plant’s vascular system as it grows, where it is expressed in the pollen and nectar.

These insecticides are highly toxic to bees because they are systemic, water soluble, and pervasive. They get into the soil and groundwater where they can accumulate and remain for many years and present long-term toxicity to the hive as well as to other species, such as songbirds.

Neonicotinoids affect insects’ central nervous systems in ways that are cumulative and irreversible. Even minute amounts can have profound effects over time.

The disappearance of bee colonies began accelerating in the United States shortly after the EPA allowed these new insecticides on the market in the mid-2000s. The lawsuit alleges that the EPA allowed the neonicotinoids to remain on the market despite clear warning signs of a problem.

It also alleges the EPA acted outside of the law by allowing conditional registration of the pesticides, a measure that allows a product to enter the market despite the absence of certain data.

 

European Food Safety Authority Ruled Neonicotinoids ‘Unacceptable’

The EPA’s continued allowance of neonicotinoids becomes all the more irresponsible in light of recent findings by other government organizations. Earlier this year, for instance, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released a report that ruled neonicotinoid insecticides are essentially “unacceptable” for many crops.¹ The European Commission asked EFSA to assess the risks associated with the use of three common neonicotinoids – clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam – with particular focus on:

• Their acute and chronic effects on bee colony survival and development
• Their effects on bee larvae and bee behavior
• The risks posed by sub-lethal doses of the three chemicals

One of the glaring issues that EFSA came across was a widespread lack of information, with scientists noting that in some cases gaps in data made it impossible to conduct an accurate risk assessment. Still, what they did find was “a number of risks posed to bees” by the three neonicotinoid insecticides. The Authority found that when it comes to neonicotinoid exposure from residues in nectar and pollen in the flowers of treated plants:²

“…only uses on crops not attractive to honeybees were considered acceptable.”

As for exposure from dust produced during the sowing of treated seeds, the Authority ruled “a risk to honeybees was indicated or could not be excluded…” Unfortunately, neonicotinoids have become the fastest growing insecticides in the world. In the US, virtually all genetically engineered Bt corn crops are treated with neonicotinoids.

 

Serious Risks to Bees Already Established

One of the observed effects of these insecticides is weakening of the bee’s immune system. Forager bees bring pesticide-laden pollen back to the hive, where it’s consumed by all of the bees.

Six months later, their immune systems fail, and they fall prey to secondary, seemingly “natural” bee infections, such as parasites, mites, viruses, fungi and bacteria. Pathogens such as Varroa mites, Nosema, fungal and bacterial infections, and Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) are found in large amounts in honeybee hives on the verge of collapse.

Serious honeybee die-offs have been occurring around the world for the past decade but no one knows exactly why the bees are disappearing.

The phenomenon, dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), is thought to be caused by a variety of imbalances in the environment, although agricultural practices such as the use of neonicotinoid pesticides are receiving growing attention as more research comes in. As written in the journal Nature:³

“Social bee colonies depend on the collective performance of many individual workers. Thus, although field-level pesticide concentrations can have subtle or sublethal effects at the individual level, it is not known whether bee societies can buffer such effects or whether it results in a severe cumulative effect at the colony level. Furthermore, widespread agricultural intensification means that bees are exposed to numerous pesticides when foraging, yet the possible combinatorial effects of pesticide exposure have rarely been investigated.”

This is what the Nature study set out to determine, and it was revealed that bees given access to neonicotinoid and pyrethroid pesticides were adversely affected in numerous ways, including:

• Fewer adult worker bees emerged from larvae
• A higher proportion of foragers failed to return to the nest
• A higher death rate among worker bees
• An increased likelihood of colony failure

The researchers said:

“Here we show that chronic exposure of bumble bees to two pesticides (neonicotinoid and pyrethroid) at concentrations that could approximate field-level exposure impairs natural foraging behavior and increases worker mortality leading to significant reductions in brood development and colony success.

We found that worker foraging performance, particularly pollen collecting efficiency, was significantly reduced with observed knock-on effects for forager recruitment, worker losses and overall worker productivity. Moreover, we provide evidence that combinatorial exposure to pesticides increases the propensity of colonies to fail.”

 

Why the Food Supply Could Be Dependent on Urgent Action by the EPA

The EPA acknowledges that “pesticide poisoning” may be one factor leading to colony collapse disorder,⁴ yet they have been slow to act to protect bees from this threat. The current lawsuit may help spur them toward more urgent action, which is desperately needed as the food supply hangs in the balance.

There are about 100 crop species that provide 90 percent of food globally. Of these, 71 are pollinated by bees.⁵ In the US alone, a full one-third of the food supply depends on pollination from bees. Apple orchards, for instance, require one colony of bees per acre to be adequately pollinated. So if bee colonies continue to be devastated, major food shortages could result.

There is also concern that the pesticides could be impacting other pollinators as well, including bumblebees, hoverflies, butterflies, moths and others, which could further impact the environment.

 

Four Steps to Help Protect the Bees

1. Support organic farmers and shop at local farmer’s markets as often as possible. You can “vote with your fork” three times a day. (When you buy organic, you are making a statement by saying “no” to GMOs and toxic pesticides!)
2. Cut the use of toxic chemicals in your house and on your lawn, and use only organic, all-natural forms of pest control.
3. Better yet, get rid of your lawn altogether and plant a garden or other natural habitat. Lawns offer very little benefit for the environment. Both flower and vegetable gardens provide excellent natural honeybee habitats.
4. Become an amateur beekeeper. Having a hive in your garden requires only about an hour of your time per week, benefits your local ecosystem, and you can enjoy your own honey!

The connection between diet and things like cancer or Alzheimer’s still hasn’t sunk in. So, when new research shows just how deadly diseases like cancer can be prevented with simple foods like broccoli, we have to do our part to get the word out.

Sulforaphane Compound Found to Suppress Tumor Growth, Halt Cancer…Again

Although certainly not the first study to link cancer with cruciferous vegetables, researchers with the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University have given us yet another reason to eat our veggies at every chance. According to their findings, a key component in broccoli, cabbage, and other crucifers has multiple benefits in the fight against cancer.

Their research was published in the journal Clinical Epigenetics, which features the latest science in how foods and environmental factors can change gene expression or activation, ultimately leading to disease or disease prevention.

Looking at the compound sulforaphane, the scientists found that it can work to not only suppress tumor growth, but also stop the spread or onset of cancer.

Cancer is very complex and it’s usually not just one thing that has gone wrong,” lead author Emily Ho said, according to Science Daily. “It’s increasingly clear that sulforaphane is a real multi-tasker. The more we find out about it, the more benefits it appears to have.”

Sulforaphane is known as an HDAC inhibitor, meaning it works to restore balance in the enzymes known as histone deacetylases (HDACs). HDAC imbalance is known to interfere with the normal function of tumor suppressing genes. By inhibiting HDACs, sulforaphane helps prevent cancer development.

In addition, it works to influence something known as DNA methylation, which is the normal process of turning off or deactivating genes that could lead to abnormal cell growth. In the case of cancer, however, DNA methylation doesn’t always work as intended. As with HDAC, however, sulforaphane is able to restore balance and correct the DNA methylation processes.

“It appears that DNA methylation and HDAC inhibition, both of which can be influenced by sulforaphane, work in concert with each other to maintain proper cell function,” said Ho. “They sort of work as partners and talk to each other.”

Though this research is exciting alone, it is far from the first linking the super-powered sulforaphane with cancer prevention. A recent study from Baylor College of Medicine, for instance, found sulforaphane can actually kill the cells of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a blood cancer common in children. Other studies have linked this compound with protecting against both prostate and breast cancer.

While sulforaphane is present in all cruciferous vegetables, it is perhaps most concentrated in broccoli. So, grow some or buy some at your local farmer’s market—but, definitely increase your consumption of the nutritious “little trees”.

In the scientific world, nothing is truly fact until it has undergone significant testing with rigorous standards. Try and tell a scientist that results in rats are “good enough” and you’ll be laughed at.

Really, randomized, double-blind placebo studies are considered solid. They are done on humans and done in such a way as to reduce the chances of results being nothing more than an anomaly. I say all of this to introduce a new study showcasing how ginger truly is a cancer-fighting food, a study that couldn’t get much better.

 

Ginger Proves to be a Useful Cancer Treatment Once Again

For the study, which was published in the PubMed journal of the National Institute of Health, scientists with Atlanta’s Emory University used a group of 20 people who were considered high risk for colorectal cancer. The patients were randomly placed in two groups, 10 who would receive ginger and 10 who would receive a placebo.

'As PF Louis with NaturalNews points out, “This double blind study approach is a rather cruel hoax for the placebo subjects while using non-toxic medicines. But they insist on this protocol and others that torture animals so they can accept it as evidence based research.”
Those who received the ginger took only 2 grams of ginger for 28 days. They were then rigorously tested for markers that indicate high risk of colorectal cancer. Biopsies were taken and blood work was done. What the scientists found was those who took ginger were significantly better than those who didn’t.

The scientists admitted, “ginger may reduce proliferation in the normal-appearing colorectal epithelium (lining) and increase apoptosis and differentiation relative to proliferation.” What does this mean? Basically, that ginger can increase cancer cell death and reduce the spread of cancer cells.

This isn’t the first study to portray ginger’s cancer-fighting abilities.  Another study found ginger to reduce prostate tumor size by 56% in mice. Sure, the study wasn’t done on humans, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they wouldn’t be reproduced.

So, do we need to wait for more research to start reaping the cancer-preventing benefits of ginger? Hardly. Ingesting two grams of ginger is easy when you can use it in tea, smoothies, and a variety of culinary creations.
