I have tended to stop using the word 'man' when talking of the human race as a whole because, as you point out, it is the past ruler ship of men that has been a saddening thing to witness. - what I have called "these little boys who haven't gotten out of the school yard and their bullying ways". so where possible I avoid the use of that word.
